Ask a Question
Are vampires immortal?
In the sense of being physically immortal, no. However, some vampires believe in reincarnation, which could be seen as a kind of immortality.
Very few vampires online claim to be physically immortal, and when they do, it's usually a claim without basis.
Are you really allergic to the sun?
There is a tendency for many to have photophobia (i.e. sensitivity to brightness) and photosensitivity (i.e. skin sensitivity to UV rays), however not everyone experiences this.
The severity of these symptoms differs between individuals, from experiencing discomfort in the sun to developing blisters. For some, it worsens when they haven't fed in a while.
Can a vampire drink another vampire's blood?
Yes, however personally speaking, it would take a lot of convincing for me to give up mine.
Although it's possible, the idea of perpetually feeding one another has been reported to not work, perhaps due to a net loss in blood/energy received.
What is a vampire?
The term "vampire" generally has 2 meanings.
1) A mythological creature popular in fictional works; and
2) An individual who regularly requires blood/energy from external sources in order to remain healthy and functional.
This service is for the latter and most mentions of the word "vampire" on this FAQ and in this site in general will refer to the latter type.
Most attributes of mythological vampires don't apply to us, such as:
- Allergy to garlic.
- Having no reflection in mirrors.
- Being physically immortal.
- Ability to turn others.
Do vampires always have fangs?
No. Some will have pointy teeth the same way that some mundanes do but that's as far as it goes.
Are vampires as susceptible to injury as mundanes?
Yes, however some vampires believe that they recover quicker from injury than most mundane.
Do vampires age and die like mundanes?
Yes. Vampires age and die as mundanes do, however some believe there is a tendency for vampires to appear younger than they are by about 10 years.
Do vampires have any powers?
No. We're just regular people.
Some vampires believe that we have a natural aptitude for energy manipulation, however mundane are also able to manipulate energy.
How do I know if I'm a vampire?
The short answer is: If you find that you are unable to remain healthy or functional without regularly feeding on blood or energy, and after consulting with all relevant medical professionals, you still have been unable to identify the cause of your condition, then it might pay to start considering you have this condition.
I would advise you to take it slow, talk to some people and read other's experiences as much as possible.
Do you like being a vampire? If you could, would you like to be rid of your need to feed?
To answer personally: I don't want to have this debilitating condition, but I feel like my condition is such a large part of me that to remove it would make me a completely different person and that doesn't compute with me.
Some see it as a burden and don't want to be a vampire. Some are pretty neutral about it and accept that that's just the way they are, and some embrace it.
Do you really drink human blood?
Some do. Sanguinarians and hybrids feed on blood and when a donor isn't available, some substitute human blood with animal blood, although animal blood is more dangerous to consume and isn't as potent.
Unfortunately, and despite much effort, a suitable substitute for blood is yet to be found.
We feed from consenting donors and most of us consume blood about once per week, depending on the individual of course.
The amount we consume will also vary, depending on the individual. Typically, our need ranges from a teapoon per week up to a pint (1/2 litre) per week.
Does drinking blood make you live longer?
How does drinking blood affect you?
Personally, I feel very relaxed and calm. I feel a strong sense of euphoria and all of my withdrawal symptoms cease.
The feeling of relaxation and euphoria is so strong that I may appear somewhat drunk to others and it can become difficult to do anything except lie down and enjoy how amazing it feels.
Once that's over, the decline begins once again. After 3 days since feeding, my symptoms start to creep back, worsening day by day.
After 1 week, it's affecting me to the point where I'll need to feed.
After 2 weeks, I can barely function.
After 3 weeks, I'm a complete wreck.
The rising need for blood doesn't stop, so proactively managing it is critical.
How many types of vampires are there?
The most common types are:
- Sanguinarian (Feeds solely on blood)
- Psi (Feeds solely on energy from people)
- Hybrid (Feeds on both blood and energy from people)
The least common type is Elemental (feeds on stormy weather and plants).
Definitions and terminology differ across the community, so it's important to keep in mind that this is just one collection of definitions among many.
What happens if a vampire bites you?
Nothing. Turning from a bite is of the mythological kind.
What's it like being a vampire?
It's a difficult question to answer. It would be similar to me asking you "What's it like to be mundane/human?".
In terms of the need for energy, I feel that it's similar to being addicted to a drug except that you can never ease off of it, you receive no sympathy from others and you're mocked and ridiculed for trying to seek help.
That's the only aspect of the question I can really answer.
Are there vampires who believe their condition is only medical?
There are many sanguinarians who believe that their condition is purely medical and that there must be a scientific cause for their condition.
These can be known as "Medical Sanguinarians" (sometimes abbreviated as "Medsang").
Some medsang communities distance themselves from the other types and focus on scientific and medical research in an attempt to further understand their condition.
What do vampires believe?
We come from all different walks of life and therefore the communities comprise of people of different religions, ethnicities, cultures and beliefs.
We also have different ideas and thoughts on what causes us to be the way we are.
Some believe that their condition is solely medical, while some believe that their condition is metaphysical in nature, often involving theories of Prana or Qi.
What is awakening?
Awakening is different for every vampire.
It is a process that typically occurs shortly after a person has finished going through puberty, but people have been known to awaken at all ages.
Is is a process in which a person realizes they're a vampire, accompanied with gradual changes to themselves such as "the thirst".
Depending on the individual, there may also be physical, mental and spiritual changes.
Do vampires hate crosses and garlic?
Are there modern day slayers?
Well there are psychotic people, some who are dangerous. Also the correct term would be murder instead of "slaying" and would result in imprisonment.
Are there any inner-circle, high-council-type groups?
The short answer is no. While there are many groups and organizations around the world, there is no globally recognized hierarchy.
Therefore, the power of those organisations and groups is typically limited to providing structure to their own members and, more widely, to have a cultural influence on the global community.
Are there members of the community who pretend to be vampires or act like fictional vampires? Are there members of the community who pretend to be vampires without actually having the condition, or who act like fictional vampires?
Yes, there will always be "posers" in the community, which are people who pretend to have this condition when they, in-fact, don't. These people are generally unwelcome.
There are also "lifestylers", vampires who dress up to resemble fictional vampirism and there's a split among the communities between those who are for and against it.
Some may argue that lifestyling pushes us away from being taken seriously, misrepresents our condition and is childish and detrimental to the community.
On the other hand, some may argue that, because some vampires may feel or identify supernaturally, some may feel more natural & comfortable with an improved mystique. For some, it may be less about appearing a certain way and more about feeling comfortable in their own skin which, arguably, everyone has the right to.
How do I become a vampire?
You don't. It's something people are born with, and come to realize they are one later in life during their awakening period. Besides, for many, it's a condition that they find difficult to manage.
Do vampire communities associate with any other types of communities?
Not usually, but some vampire communities have been known to share space with otherkin and therians.
How do vampires get their blood?
Sanguinarians get their blood from consenting donors.
The process is done in an ethical manner with screening of STDs to ensure that there is no risk of STD transmission.
Some sanguinarians who are temporarily without a donor may resort to animal's blood. This has a varying effectiveness among vampires and can be quite dangerous, with risks of bacterial or parasitical infection.
What is a Donor?
A Donor is an individual who regularly donates blood, energy or both to Vampires.
If a Donor is wanting to donate blood, they will need to be screened for STDs before donating.
Donors are equally respected in most Vampire groups.
Why does so much of the community affiliate with the term vampire?
Not all people in these communities refer to themselves as vampires but the term has been adopted and stuck around to describe our "need to feed" due to lack of a better word.
Although many use the term vampire to refer to themselves, some may seek different terminology.
To name a few terms:
- Sanguinarian/Sanguivore: One who needs to feed from blood.
- Psi [Vampire]: One who needs to feed from energy.
- Hybrid: One who feeds from both.
- Medical Sanguinarian: A sanguinarian who believes they're condition to be solely medical.
Parts of the community using the term "vampire" to refer to themselves doesn't come without controversy, both internally or externally.
Some detest its use due to it's relevance to myth and fiction, believing that we should separate ourselves from that as much as possible.
